According to estimates by the Institut Montaigne, this scourge would affect approximately 200,000 people in France, which has just published a note on the employment of seniors.

The Montaigne Institute uses several characteristics to define this professional situation. These include a lack of meaning and interest in the tasks that are being performed, withdrawal from the collective life of the company, an extremely low or even non-existent workload, and an absence of follow-up by the direct hierarchy of the work that is being carried out and regular contact.

A taboo topic that yet has to be addressed.

Shelving an employee in the hope that they will resign on their own or because it is impossible to fire them is typically against the law in France. It violates article L. 1194 of the Civil Code, which requires the company to provide the work that is specified in the employee's contract. Shelving can also fall under Articles L. 1152-1 et seq. of the Labor Code, which allows this practice to be compared to moral harassment.

According to the findings of the study, one of the many reasons why the topic is still taboo even though it is prevalent “, particularly in major firms” is because this is one of the causes. As a direct result of this, there is still very little research that looks at the phenomena and the effects it has. However, this might cause the individual to suffer psychological harm, which in turn caepercussions on their health and lead to disruptions in their employment. An index that tends to prove that the phenomenon is developing, according to the Institut Montaigne: “psychological disorders are now the second cause of sick leave in France and are experiencing a sharp increase.” They represent 20% of the latter in 2022 against 11% eight years earlier. Similarly, the proportion of employees saying that they are not invested in their tasks has increased significantly: 26% of employees in 2022 compared to 18% in 2018.

In response to this revelation, the think tank asks for national efforts to increase knowledge of the detrimental nature of the phenomena among employers, unions, and HRDs. In addition, occupational medicine might integrate the issue into its prevention axes.
